My roots lie in the Netherlands, Indonesia, the UK and France and for many years I have wanted to build my family tree. Thanks to the most precious and highly appreciated help of my dear friend Sue I now am the proud owner of several British census records of 1841, 1851 and 1861! I now know for example that my great-great grandfather was a grocer and tea dealer in Ipswich (UK). So it may very well be possible that he was already importing tea from Java. Is that where my great-grandfather got the idea to start his own plantation on Java? Together with his French wife? My grandfather followed into his footsteps and set up his own sugar plantation and sugar factory. Due to the Japanese occupation and later the police actions our family has been left bereft by the loss of many photos, there are just a few, which I cherish immensely. To honour this piece of history I made a vintage desk of DIY matchboxes (I found the template for these boxes right here). I can imagine my grandfather sitting behind his desk to fill out his ledger books, pictures of him and my grandmother hanging on the wall... I'll be continuing my treasure hunt...
